DECO1800 - Design Computing Studio 1
PROJECT: A Day In The Life
YEAR: 2019
Design Computing Studio 1 is the first of three major studio courses that brings together students from various backgrounds and skill sets to work together on a project throughout the semester. the aim of this course was to combine and build upon the skills learnt in DECO1100 and DECO1400. The brief for this course was to create a web-based app that would be used on a mobile device as part of a museum exhibit.
From a technical perspective, we needed to be able to pull data provided by the State Library of Queensland APIs and simulate how our app would work in a museum exhibit with this data. This course built upon my existing skills in HTML, CSS and JS as well as introducing new skills in JSON and PHP.
My focus for this course was on the front-end development and overall UI design of the app. My team went through multiple iterations of the project to ensure it would continue to meet the brief and to test the usability of the app as we continued to add functionality to it. I needed to ensure that the app remained usable on a touch-centric interaction medium as well as ensuring consistent design throughout the app and that the data pulled the APIs displayed correctly and in a user-friendly way.
The app my team created used this data to weave together a story about various soldiers throughout history. We simulated a scavenger-hunt style exhibit where the users would take the device around the museum with them, looking for the codes they need to unlock more information about the soldier they had.
