DECO3500 - Social & Mobile Computing

PROJECT: Wiser

YEAR: 2022

DECO3500 was a course focused on the concepts of social and mobile computing. It was heavily focused on how we design systems that would be used in a social and mobile context and what considerations need to be made for these use cases. Like other DECO courses, this project was a team-based assessment that worked on iteratively throughout the semester with a user research at the forefront.

The key concepts of social and mobile computing that we focused on was location-specific and collaboration. Based on our research, we wanted to create a system that would help students aged 6 - 8 on their reading and writing skills in accordance with the Australian Curriculum. The project we created was Wiser: a collaborative and interactive storybook creation tool that would be used in classrooms a learning support activity. Wiser allows teachers to build up student’s reading and writing skills by facilitating a session in which all the students in the class will contribute to writing and reading a story either created by the class or with an existing story from their library. For this project, I was largely responsible for the front-end development of the site, the graphic and visual design as well as some troubleshooting and functionality fixing later in the semester. We were quite limited by the fact that we weren’t hosting the site live, we were keeping the code on GitHub as such making a dynamically updating website between two devices wasn’t possible but we were able to simulate enough of the experience to communicate our intention at the end of semester exhibit.
